His Excellency Enayatullah Nabiel, Ambassador of Afghanistan to the Netherlands, visited the Agency’s Netherlands location on 13 December.
The Deputy General Manager, Kevin Scheid, provided a detailed overview of what we do as an Agency. In addition to the Agency's extensive support to the ISAF mission, the discussions also focused on NC3A projects in support of Afghan civilian authorities:
- SILK Project in Afghanistan – the Ambassador was unaware that the NATO Public Diplomacy Division and NC3A was instrumental in getting internet connectivity to nine major universities in Afghanistan through satellite communications;
- Afghan Flood Hazard Map by the Agency’s GEO team - discussion on how the maps are able to assist local authorities in deciding where to build schools, roads and other infrastructure in light of analysis as to where flooding may occur. Originally delivered to the Afghan government in 2009. The Ambassador requested more details and wants to go back to his government, in order to highlight this project. The Deputy General Manager and Luigi Bella, Director of Production, accompanied the Ambassador to the GEO team where he was shown video of how the flood hazard map works and received additional information.
There was a discussion on the process of establishing bilateral cooperation between the Agency and Nations, including NATO Partner Nations, and the possibility of having one with Afghanistan government.
The Ambassador also received a briefing on NC3A support to the teams that are training and mentoring the Afghan security forces, which is a key pillar of the transitions strategy in Afghanistan, as well as the Agency’s role in the Kandahar Air Traffic Control implementation.
